The farm is a work in progress, and perhaps that will always be the case. Improving the buildings, fences, landscaping and maybe even the house one day, seems to take incredible amounts of time. One thing is for sure, even at it's most overwhelming, there is beauty everywhere you look. The acreage is secured by fencing to keep the poultry in and predators out and the livestock dogs Larry and Vernon are tasked with making sure this is always the case. The poultry houses are large and roomy, heated in winter and ventilated in summer with access to the entire property every day the weather allows. This program allows the birds to be birds at every single opportunity.
Despite my best attempts at biosecurity, I have had my share of issues from parasites to ILT. I've learned from this by consulting with my vets and veterinary drug reps so I can continue to encourage health and immune system strength in my birds. Sealing the birds in from the outside world isn't the answer in my view. Managing poultry in the manner I choose may be more work, but the reward is walking out the front door to see beautiful, healthy birds on the lawn, in the bushes, in the pond and even in my flower beds and knowing that we are promoting future generations of hardy Canadian poultry.
