Raising Granite Acres Poultry
0 - 5 weeks
Our sale chicks are incubated, hatched and brooded inside of our home for the first few weeks of life so we can supervise their health and keep them free of any diseases the outside world may be harbouring. Chicken chicks are fed a commercial starter feed that contains a coccidiostat, our other species are fed the appropriate starter diet. We give mashed boiled egg, vitamins and a probiotic/enzyme supplement to all our babies. Grit is offered at 2-3 weeks of age, and we begin feeding chopped leafy veggies. At 4 weeks, our young chickens are vaccinated for ILT (infectious laryngotracheitis) with a non-shedding vaccine (*Ordering vaccinated youngsters is possible for an additional fee). By 5 weeks, they are eating a varied diet and have had their first daytime excursions outside. Chicks are very vulnerable to disease at this stage and ours will not have contact with adult birds or chicks from other farms during this time.
6 weeks - 3 months
We have a variety of "chicken tractors" and coops and once the young birds are acclimated to their new homes and their immune systems are more developed, they are turned loose to free range. We have multiple feeding stations set out for the birds each day and nightly veggies and snacks gets everyone back home at night so they can be safely locked up until morning. At 10 weeks of age, our young chickens are boosted for ILT and are considered protected for one year.
3 months - 6 months and older
Selecting our breeders, the layers, and the heritage birds for the table, takes time. We provide B Vitamins for every stressful process they may endure in their lives and all birds remain on enzymes and probiotics. Their varied diet and outdoor foraging continues through summer and fall which allows us to identify the birds that are thriving in this environment. We select these birds to contribute to the next generation because we believe that form follows function. Around 5-6 months of age, our chosen breeder hens start to lay their eggs and the birds meant for the table are ready. The quality of meat and eggs derived from an animal that's lived a healthy, free ranging life is not something you will see duplicated in the supermarket. Time, IS everything.
Government inspected poultry for sale on a limited basis, please inquire about availability and pricing.
